What is tallow, and why does SMEAR use it?

Tallow is rendered fat from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle, specifically the suet surrounding the kidneys. Tallow naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K and closely resembles the natural oils found in human skin, which is why many people find it deeply moisturizing and nourishing.

Which product is right for me?

Each SMEAR blend is crafted for specific needs:

  • Our WHIPs: Our Whipped Tallow has a light, airy texture that absorbs quickly, making it ideal for daily moisturizing of the face and body.
  • Our BALMs: Our Balms have a richer, denser texture that helps lock in moisture and is ideal for targeted areas like elbows, knees, or other spots needing extra hydration.
  • Honey Wash: This single-ingredient cleanser bridges the gap between food and skincare — reminding us that sometimes, the best nourishment is the simplest.
  • Psalm Serum: A concentrated facial oil formulated with botanical oils and extracts to help moisturize, soften, and support the appearance of smooth, healthy-looking skin. Made without water, fillers, synthetic fragrance, parabens, or phthalates, it is suitable for daily use on the face and neck.
  • Soothe Magnesium Soak: Our SOOTHE Soak contains Magnesium Chloride Flakes from the Dead Sea, Evaporated Dead Sea Salt, Organic Lavender Buds. These ancient minerals were chosen to aid in deep relaxation for sore muscles.

Are SMEAR products safe for babies and during pregnancy?

Can I use SMEAR on my face?

What is the shelf life of SMEAR products?

Our products are best used within 6-12 months. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain their integrity.

Do SMEAR products melt?

Are your products vegan?

A majority of our products contain tallow, which is derived from beef suet. We honor traditional skincare practices that utilize every part of the animal, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and respect.

However, our DETOX Line (Honey Wash, Psalm Serum, and Soothe Soak) does not contain tallow. Our Honey Wash is sourced from Petal Honey Co. - you can read more about their story and values here. Our Psalm Serum and Soothe Magnesium Soak are free from animal-derived ingredients.

Can I use SMEAR on my pets?

Our Clean Balm is chosen by families for pets for moisturizing dry paws or areas of rough skin. Always consult with your veterinarian before introducing new products to your pet's care routine.
