Did the Heat Beat You to Your Package?

We know how it happens.
Life gets busy.
You forget to check tracking.
You’re not home when the mail arrives.
Your package sits in the mailbox or on the porch in the summer sun…
And the next thing you know — your SMEAR arrived melted.
Take a breath. It’s okay.
Let’s walk through what happened and what to do next.

First — Is My Product Ruined?

No. SMEAR is designed to melt on contact with your skin. That low melt point is intentional — it’s what gives our tallow its signature glide and absorption. Heat may change the texture but the great news- it does not remove the benefits!

Why Does It Look Like Half a Jar?

Our Whip is whipped until fluffy — like buttercream. That fluffy texture contains air.
When the product melts, the air collapses. You’re not losing product; you are just losing volume. The net weight listed on your jar remains accurate.

What To Do If Your Product Arrives Melted

If Your Balm Melted: 

  1. Gently swirl it in the jar
  2. Place it in the refrigerator
  3. Allow it to fully solidify (a few hours)

It will reset into a soft butter texture, and you can use it exactly the same way!

If Your Whip Melted:
If your Whip melted into a golden liquid:

  1. Place the jar in the refrigerator until fully solid.
  2. Once firm, transfer to a clean bowl using a clean metal utensil.
  3. Re-whip with a hand mixer for 30–60 seconds.
  4. Spoon back into your jar.

It may not achieve the exact same hand-piped swirl we create in-house — but you will retain all of the product and benefits.

Why Re-Whipped Texture May Look Different
Once tallow has fully melted and re-solidified, its crystalline structure changes slightly.
It can still be beautifully usable — it just may not regain that ultra-fluffy signature swirl.
This is cosmetic only, not functional.

How to Avoid Melt Issues in the Future

We ship USPS Priority Mail and do everything possible to move orders quickly.
That said, summer heat is powerful.

Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Watch Your Tracking
    • Packages usually arrive around your normal mail delivery time.
  • Plan for Delivery
    • If you won’t be home, consider:
      • Sending to a friend’s address
      • Asking someone to grab it
      • Bringing it inside as soon as delivered

A Gentle Reminder

SMEAR is intentionally formulated without stabilizers or synthetic hardeners.
We choose purity over shelf stability.
That means in extreme heat — it will melt.
And that’s okay.
It’s part of working with real, whole ingredients.
